Abstract/Summary:
Across the Winding River is one of the outstanding works of American writer Aimie K.Runyan.This fiction narrates the story of the World War II in the first person, centering around the three protagonists through two time lines. It is of great literary value, though it has not been translated since its publication in 2020.Fiction is a literary text. When creating, writers would like to transform non-literary language into literary language in literary works.Ideational grammatical metaphor theory holds that such a transformation process is a transformation from the “congruent-form”transitivity process to the “incongruent-form” transitivity process. Therefore,in the process of fiction translation, firstly, the translator should transform the“incongruent-form” transitivity process into the “congruent” transitivity process in the understanding stage, and then choose whether to retain the transformed transitivity process(expressed in plain target language)or transform the transformed process into metaphorical process(expressed in literary target language)in the expression stage according to the linguistic characteristics and context of the text. This translation practice uses ideational grammatical metaphor theory to guide the translation of transitivity system in fictions, which further proves the feasibility of systemic functional linguistics in guiding translation practice, hoping to provide reference for fiction translation in the future.
