British Missionary Activities In Bengal And Its Influence(1793-1857) | | Posted on:2022-10-24 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:C F Huang | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2505306506960949 | Subject:World History | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | Christianity has a long history of introduction to India,Indian culture has maintained its own religious identity while absorbing foreign culture,so that the early spread of Christianity in India was confined to the southern part of the country.And with the decline of the Mughal Empire and competition between Western colonial powers,the British gained colonial supremacy in India after the eighteenth century and the East India Company was transformed from a commercial trading company into a British colonial ruling body in India.The economically prosperous and densely populated region of Bengal,where East meets West,became a bridgehead for Britain in India,and naturally became a desired missionary area for missionaries.The East India Company,as a foreign ruler,was concerned that the introduction of Christianity into Bengal would cause resistance from the local people in terms of religious sentiment,so the Company prohibited British missionaries from going to Bengal until 1793,when the missionary William Curry entered Bengal in 1793 and the British missionary organisations were able to spread Christianity in Bengal.This in turn began the history of British missionary work in Bengal.This article explores in depth the background,missionary history,characteristics and impact of British missionaries in Bengal between 1793 and 1857.In addition to the introduction,this paper has the following four chapters:Chapter One,A brief analysis of the background to the British mission in Bengal.Details the establishment and implementation of the East India Company’s policy of religious neutrality and the change in British attitude towards foreign missions,and on this basis outlines the political,economic and educational conditions in eighteenth-century Bengal and understands the historical background to British missions in Bengal.Chapter Two,Discusses the missionary journey of British missionaries in Bengal from 1793 to 1857.A chronological overview of the British mission in Bengal is divided into two historical phases.The first stage was the initial spread of Christianity in Bengal from 1793 to 1813,when missionary activity was constrained by government policy and spread only partially in Bengal.The second stage was the further spread of Christianity in Bengal from 1813 to 1857.After the Charter Act of 1813,Christianity could be freely spread in India,so many British missionary organisations entered Bengal to carry out missionary activities,making Christianity widely spread in the region.Chapter Three,Analyse primarily the characteristics of British missionary activity during this period.Understand that British missionary activity in Bengal was different from that in other areas,and that British missionary activity was characterised by its diversity,its twists and turns,its dependence and the small number of converts.Chapter Four,Summarise the impact of British missionary activity on Bengali society.The missionary activities of British missionaries in Bengal promoted social and religious reform in the region and contributed to the cultural development of Bengal,On the other hand,the close relationship between missionary and British colonial rule made the missionaries an advance guard for colonial expansion,providing religious justification for British colonial rule and intensifying the colonisation of India. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Britain, Bengal, Missionary, Characteristics, Influence | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
