Literature is one of the effective ways for us to communicate history and reality.As a writer of Tibet,Alai realizes the interaction between history and reality in a literary way,and paints us a series of historical pictures of Tibet that are both real and unreal,like songs and sobs.Throughout his novel creation,we can see that he always focuses on those grand themes,explores the connection between history and reality in his epic literary construction,and reveals the depth of history and human destiny in the changing times.From his novels,we can feel the generous feelings of the writer as the earth,as well as the unique character of historical narrative.Therefore,this paper will take the historical writing of Alai’s novels as the starting point,and take The Dust Settles and The Empty Mountain as examples,by the way of reading the text attentively,to explore and present the meaning and value of the epic writing in Alai’s novels.Apart from the introduction and the conclusion,this paper is divided into four chapters to discuss the epic of The Dust Settles and The Empty Mountain.The first chapter: the presentation of epic nature.This chapter first defines the concept of epic and epic,then gives a brief overview of the evolution of the focus of epic creation in modern and contemporary Chinese literature,and finally demonstrates that The Dust Settles and The Empty Mountain are epic respectively.Chapter two: the meaning of the historical theme.This part mainly discusses the three themes of history,humanity and destiny sung repeatedly in Alai’s grand narrative,and explores and shows Alai’s concern and mourning for the passive fate of individuals and ethnic groups under the changing times.Chapter three: the epic narrative strategy.This chapter mainly discusses the narrative strategy of the epic construction of Alai’s The Dust Settles and The Empty Mountain from three aspects of narrative perspective,narrative structure and narrative language.Chapter four: the value of epic.Based on the standpoint of Alai’s creation,this paper discusses the implication and value of Alai’s epic writing in The Dust Settles and The Empty Mountain from the perspective of ethnic culture and modern criticism.He tried to achieve a universal practical significance through the literary writing of his own ethnic group.His writing about Tibet makes us go beyond the boundaries of region,language and ethnic group,and further perceive the wholeness of the world.
