A Practice Report On Characteristic Vocabulary In The Chinese-English Simulated Consecutive Interpreting Of A Harmony Life In Hei Longjiang From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

The Chinese characteristic vocabulary condenses the essence of the culture which is the crystallization of historical development with full-bodied Chinese characteristics.Because Chinese culture has just emerged on the international stage,there are few documents on national characteristic vocabulary.This practical report discusses Nida’s “Functional Equivalence” theory in the translation of characteristic words through the practice of simulating consecutive interpretation of the documentary A Harmony Life in Hei Longjiang.This paper studies how to better convey the Chinese characteristics vocabulary to the audience on the basis of accurate translation,so that they can feel the perception of the source-text audience.Nida’s “Functional Equivalence” theory points out that translation is a communicative behavior that should be based on the reader’s feelings.In other words,translation does not seek rigid correspondence on the surface of the text,but reproduces the information of the source language in the most appropriate,natural and equivalent language.When the interpreter meets the English language which does not have the corresponding "Chinese characteristic vocabulary ",there will be many problems such as missing translations,mistranslations and so on.Combined with Nida’s “Functional Equivalence” theory and the practice of this simulated consecutive interpretation,this paper analyzes the specific problems of the translation of characteristic words in the process of interpretation,which is mainly reflected in the following points: mistranslation of characteristic words at the semantic level,mistranslation of characteristic words at the cultural level and the incoherent expression of characteristic words.In view of the above,this paper discusses the corresponding solutions,including: the strategy of content faithful equivalence,the strategy of cultural purpose equivalence and the strategy of discourse coherence equivalence.The case analysis and practice summary of this paper shows that Nida’s “Functional Equivalence” theory has the guiding significance to the translation of characteristic vocabulary.It is hoped that the corresponding solution can help interpreters to solve some key difficulties in the process of interpretation,and has certain enlightenment and reference value for the translation of characteristic words into English.
