Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 devastated the Qiang regions and damage the Qiang culture.Since then,the efforts to "Save Qiang Culture" have been put on the agenda.Based on the folk culture of Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County,the book A Popular Reading on Folk Culture of Qiang People presents the charm of Qiang culture in the language,architectural art and religious belief.Under the Belt and Road Initiative,intercultural translations promote the spread of Chinese culture.Therefore,the translation of the book aims to introduce the excellent Chinese traditional culture to the world.Based on the English translation from the preface to the sixth chapter of A Popular Reading on Folk Culture of Qiang People,this report records every step in the translation process in details.Guided by Vermeer’s Skopos Theory,the translator selects some typical cases in the translation to analyze translation skills,aiming to study how to improve the translation quality of the texts on Chinese traditional culture,and enhance the positive significance of Skopos Theory to better present China to the world.After clarifying the purpose of the translation,the translator repeatedly reads the source text,retrieves parallel texts,and decides to make use of the computer-aided translation software "Power Echo".Under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos Theory,the author analyzes typical translation cases from lexical level,syntactic level,and cultural level on how to achieve the translation purpose of“spreading Qiang culture to foreign readers in an easy-to-understand way”.For different translation cases,different skills such as conversion,amplification,omission,free translation,order adjustment and division can be applied to reach the translation goals.In addition,while following the principles of Skopos as a priority,the author also conducts the study on the focus of the principle of fidelity or the principle of coherence under different circumstances.Therefore,the author reaches the following conclusions: firstly,the translation quality of intercultural publicity texts relies on both the translator’s solid language skills and a large amount of cultural input;Secondly,with the reasonable application of the three principles,Vermeer’s Skopos Theory has a positive effect on the translation of cultural texts;Finally,the author expects that the translation of this text and this report will provide references for future researches on Qiang culture and intercultural publicity.
