The late Qing Dynasty was a period of political,social and cultural transformation in China,and it was also an important stage for the formation and development of Baoquan Chen ’s educational thought.At the period from 1895 to 1911,Baoquan Chen experienced the transformation of multiple identities,such as the student of academy,editor of book bureau,teacher of new style school,student studying in Japan,official of education administration department,etc.In this process,his educational thought and practice gradually changed from tradition to modern times,from childish to mature.Baoquan Chen’s educational thought of national education,teacher education and industrial education,as well as his educational practices such as the establishment of tutoring centers for teachers,the exhibition halls of educational materials,the centers for encouraging students to study and the centers for preaching,are of great significance to the popularization of national education,the cultivation of teachers’ talents and the improvement of national quality at that time.The late Qing Dynasty is not only an important period of transformation of Baoquan Chen ’s educational thought,but also an important foundation period for him to stand out in the educational circle in the early Republic of China.With the emergence of new social media,such as newspapers and new schools,Baoquan Chen had access to modern advanced scientific culture and educational thoughts and was able to integrate into the new intellectual group.He got acquainted with many famous figures such as Chunying Wang,Xiu Yan and Xuexi Zhou.Among them,Xiu Yan’s influence on Baoquan Chen is the most critical.whether Baoquan Chen as a teacher in Tianjin in the first primary school,or in the education administrative agency,Baoquan Chen got Xiu Yan’s reuse and affirmative,also Baoquan Chen’s thought of education is under the influence of Xiu Yan’s repair,especially the teacher education and practical education is in the same vein as Xiu Yan.The late Qing Dynasty was a complex era of collision between China and the West and alternation of the old and the new.People living in this era also showed the characteristics of blending the old and the new.Due to the complicated historical background,the deep-rooted Confucian traditional thought and the educational experience and knowledge structure combining Chinese and Western education,Baoquan Chen’s educational thought and practice also showed the characteristics of blending the old and the new.
