This paper is a practice report on English-Chinese translation. The original text of the translation project is excerpted from the novel Infinite Jest by the famous American writer David Foster Wallace. The novel presents readers with a grotesque society picture of America’s future, revealing three human characteristics in this society: addiction, entertainment and desires. This report focuses on the first chapter of the novel as the object of case analysis, and discusses the possible problems in the translation process and proposes solutions. In the process of translation, the translator took functional equivalence theory as theoretical guidance, and adopted translation techniques such as amplification, omission, conversion, reorganization and division to make the translation closer to the style of original text.In the chapter of case study, the translator analyzed the original text from three aspects:lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. The translator’s main aim in translating this novel is to express the content of the original text and its language style as faithfully, accurately and fluently as possible.Through this translation practice, the translator learns that practice and theory complement each other and that translation skills are also an indispensable part of analyzing the characteristics of the original text.At the same time, the translator has accumulated some experience in the translation of literary texts, which lays a foundation for the translation of literary texts in the future, and expects to continuously improve himself in the translation process in the future.
