As the capital city of Jilin Province, one of the three northeastern provinces,Changchun is a city of great research value in the northeast region of China.Comparing with ancient capitals and towns in central China,Changchun is a young city, but the special period in modern history gives it unique value in the study of hist orical geography.Being far away from the political center of ancient China, the process of forming settlements and cities in Changchun happened relatively late.During the modern history of China, however,Changchun achieved modernization at a rapid pace.Affected by the construction of the railway and the situation of war,the planning and construction carried out in Changchun was very unique and efficient. From 1932 to 1945,the city planning, especially street planning,of Changchun, delin eated the basic framework for the spatial form of Changchun, which still affects the development and operation of the city nowadays. The street is the skeleton of the city, which not only promotes beauty of the city, but also serves the daily life of urban residents at all times. The fact that Changchun continues to use street plans from its early modernization period deserves thinking and researching. This article will analyze the street plan of Changchun from 1932 to 1945 in order to develop a better understanding of the street plan left over from that special period, and improve it to suit the needs of today’s Changchun. The article will be divided into the following six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, explaining the basis for topic selection and the research significance. It also reviews the existing research on the early modernization and city planning of Changchun, which clarifies the research direction and proposes the research method. The second chapter is the background of the urban street plan of Changchun from 1932 to 1945.This chapter contains two parts: the first part discusses the influence of environmental factors on the construction of Chinese Eastern Railway, and further discusses its influence on the urbanization of Changchun;the second part analyzes the political situation to clarify the reason why Changchun was selected as the capital of the Puppet Manchukuo among other cities in Northeast China. The third chapter discusses the characteristics of street plan of Changchun from1932 to 1945.Zooming in on individual streets,it is obvious that the streets in the urban planning of Changchun were designed to be very wide, which is rare to see in other cities in Northeast China of the same period. The purpose behind such design is to reserve a certain amount of space for future urban development.Looking at the city as a whole,it can be observed that the street plan of Changchun is characterized with geometric layout that combines radial and checkerboard pattern. The fourth chapter traces the source of ideation of the street plan of Changchun from 1932 to 1945.Based on its characteristics, the street plan in Changchun is analyzed through a comparative study with other modern cities in the world. The radial baroque city plan and symmetrical checkerboard layout referred to cities such as Washington D.C.and Canberra, while unique and original designs were applied at the same time. The fifth chapter discusses the influence of street plan from 1932 to 1945 on present day Changchun through an analysis of the current situation of Changchun that traces back to the impacts caused by its early street plan. The sixth chapter is the conclusion.Based on the research of the previous chapters,it summarizes the process and influence of street planning in Changchun in modern history and expresses insights on the street plan of present day Changchun.
