Codification Structure And History Writing Of Biographies Of The Records Of The Grand Historian

In this paper,we will take the biographies of The Records of the Grand Historian as the object of study,and take the codification structure and History Writing of the historical biographies as the angle of analysis to explore Sima Qian’s thoughts and methods of writing.Through the seventy biographies,we will analyze and grasp the relationship between historical events,historical texts,historical methods,and historical meanings,which can also be used as a logical analogy.In turn,the experience of historical codification can be used to guide and serve the purpose of specific historical codification.In this paper,we propose to discuss the method and Compilation of the historical biographies in four parts.In the first part,the basic notion of the comprehensive narrative of the history of the Chronicles,which is based on the importance of personnel,the interrelationship of various styles,and the codification purpose of investigating heaven and man,understanding the past and present,examining the end and identifying the rise and fall of the history,is explained.In the second part,the seventy biographies of The Records of the Grand Historian are divided into special biographies,joint biographies,subsidiary biographies,and class biographies from the perspective of codification structure,and the internal logic and compilation intentions of the arrangement of the titles are explored.In the third part,the linguistic presentation,selection of historical facts,evaluation,details,and history writing of the assertions in the narrative of the biographies are exemplified and explained.The fourth part analyzes the purpose of the compilation as reflected in the history writing and codification structure method,as well as the emotional expression of Sima Qian’s own encounters and the ideological causes of the specific socio-historical ideas reflected in the biographies.Each of the five styles of The Records of the Grand Historian works in tandem with the other,reflecting the whole picture of social life in history from multiple perspectives,at multiple levels,and in all directions.In contrast to the main style of history,which is the main chronicle,the seventy biographies play a supplementary and specific explanatory role.It explores the treatment between the subject’s emotions and the objects of historical knowledge;the way in which reason and sensibility are combined;the selection of historical materials,the method of writing,the principles and purposes;and the methodology of understanding the historical process and trends reflected in it,as well as the ideology carried by the personnel accounts and evaluations.This is useful for a concrete appreciation and understanding of Sima Qian’s ideas and methods of writing.
