| Ogurusu Kōchō(1831-1905)is a distinguished monk of the Tokotoyoji Temple of the Shin Sect of Pure Land in Japan,deeply influenced by Confucian culture,he has always been enthusiastic about Japanese Buddhism’s missionary work in China.Ogurusu Kōchō’s missionary thoughts laid the basic tone and theoretical guiding significance for the overseas missionary thoughts and activities of modern Japanese Buddhism,which started with Higashi-honganji’s missionary activities in China.His thoughts took a turn after Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895 in his later years.But the development of his missionary thought has not been clearly sorted out.This paper will examine Ogurusu Kōchō’s missionary thoughts and the formation and evolution of his Buddhist Asian-ism.Investigate the formation of early overseas missionary thought of modern Japanese Buddhism and the modernization of Japanese Buddhist Asian-ism.The first chapter focuses on the early thoughts of Ogurusu Kōchō under the situation of domestic religious circles in Japan.Ogurusu Kōchō’s thoughts during this period were mainly based on the consistency of "Repel Christianity,Protect Dharma and Protect the country " 。After the attack of Haibutsu Kishaku in the Buddhist circle and the completion of the pioneering business in Hokkaido,Ogurusu Kōchō came up with the idea of self-help to preach overseas.The second chapter examines the formation and evolution of Ogurusu Kōchō’s thoughts on missionary work in China.During Ogurusu Kōchō’s first visit to the Qing Dynasty to study Buddhism in the late Qing Dynasty,his thoughts from Defensive as offensive "consult" Chinese Strategies to protect the Dharma to India,China,Japan Buddhism joint fight against the Both offensive and defensive of Christianity.After receiving no response from the Chinese Buddhist circle and a reply from Higashihonganji’s headquarters that he was allowed to preach in China,he turned to Treat offense as defense to restore the status of Japanese Buddhism in the domestic religious circle through missionary work in China.After Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895,Ogurusu Kōchō’s missionary thought turned to nationalism completely.The third chapter analyzes the early thoughts of the overseas missionary of modern Japanese Buddhism.From the Meiji government’s religious policy and overseas expansion strategy to investigate the characteristics of Ogurusu Kōchō religious thought.The formation and evolution of Buddhist Asian-ism of Ogurusu Kōchō were analyzed from the ideological logic of Japanese Buddhist Asianismand Japanese Asian theory for a long period of time.The significance of taking Ogurusu Kōchō as the center to study the formation of early overseas missionary thought of modern Japanese Buddhism and the modernization of Japanese Buddhist Asian-ism.Ogurusu Kōchō’s missionary thought was the combination of Buddhist thought,Buddhist Asianismand Meiji government’s foreign policy.The traditional features of protecting the country of Japanese Buddhism and the traditional Asian theory of Japan,is the most fundamental reason why his missionary thought finally fell to the colonial Japanese empire Colonial education,and Buddhist Asian-ism finally fell to the modern Japanese Asian culture theory. |
