The Nonlinear Narrative Study Of Christopher Nolan Films

Christopher Nolan,as a British-born Hollywood film director,has always maintained the attributes of an "author’s film" with a distinct personal style and characteristics.Nolan has directed eleven films from the early mystery film "Follow" to the large-scale sci-fi action film "Tenet".He always adheres to the spirit of independence and innovation,and can achieve a win-win situation between art and commerce.He has the title of "master of nonlinear narrative ".On the basis of keeping the Hollywood tradition,his films are full of British style,and the nonlinear narrative and space-time construction of his films are worthy of our in-depth study.This article focuses on exploring the unique non-linear narrative characteristics of Nolan’s films,taking the director Christopher Nolan and his film works as the research object,taking time and space as the starting point from the perspective of narratology.The article also involves psychoanalysis,physics,psychology,philosophy and other disciplines.In the introduction,the author expounds the research background and the current research status of Christopher Nolan and his films and the nonlinear narrative in the film,and confirms the research value of the nonlinear narrative in Nolan’s films.The first part of the text traces the historical evolution of narratology,linear narrative and nonlinear narrative,and defines the concept of nonlinear narrative in films.In addition,the creation process of the director’s film works in three different periods is summarized.The three periods are the period of independent production,the preliminary exploration period of Hollywood film and the mature period of Hollywood film.Then it analyzes the influence of the characteristics of The Times and personal experience on the formation of Nolan’s creative concept as a director,as well as the comprehensive evaluation of the film from multiple perspectives,which lays the foundation for the research of the following paper.In the second part,a case study is carried out from three aspects of non-linear narrative content,structure and image code.Firstly,the content of nonlinear narrative is analyzed from the perspectives of puzzle narrative,narrative theme,character image and cultural metaphor.Secondly,the characteristics of nonlinear narrative structure of the film are discussed from the perspective of space-time view,and the types of nonlinear narrative structure are summarized.Then,the techniques of narrative perspective and narrative logic are systematically elaborated.Finally,it explores the nonlinear narrative image code of Nolan’s films,including its unique visual and auditory narrative language.The third part,through the nonlinear narrative style of Nolan’s films in-depth exploration,analysis of the spatio-temporal mystery of the "Nolan" nonlinear narrative characteristics.Then it explains the realistic value of Nolan’s films and the prospect of Chinese nonlinear narrative films,hoping to have a certain reference value for the development of Chinese nonlinear narrative films in the bottleneck period of creation.
