Verbs have always been the focus of lexicography due to their own complexity. But factive verbs have attracted a lot of attention from scholars due to their unique semantic features and syntactic structures. As one of the most popular dictionaries for non-native Chinese learners,Chinese-English dictionaries play important roles in guiding their Chinese learning. However, research on the representations of factive verbs in Chinese-English dictionaries from the perspective of lexicography can hardly be seen. Therefore, based on The Theory of Norms and Exploitations and Cognitive Construal Theory, the thesis conducts comprehensive and systematic research on the microstructure of factive verbs in Chinese-English dictionaries, analyzes the deficiencies of the representational modes and the current situations,as well as optimizes and improves them in combination with related theories. The thesis adopts qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore the microstructure of factive verbs in five mainstream Chinese-English dictionaries.Through corpus retrieval and data analysis,a comprehensive investigation of the current status of the compilations of factive verbs gives insight into deficiencies in representational modes of factive verbs. The results show that there exist significant differences in the microstructure of factive verbs in the current Chinese-English dictionaries, and the uniqueness of some factive verbs is not fully reflected. It includes the following issues precisely: 1)The mainstream Chinese-English dictionaries fail to fully reflect factivity with the help of syntactical annotations, examples, and so on;2)Factivity is not fully considered, which leads to the unequal mapping of argument structures between lemma and equivalents, and so on;3)Too much attention is paid to dictionaries themselves while insufficient attention is paid to users’ cognitive habits and acquisition mechanisms;4)Exploitations are overlooked, and interrelations among the components of representation structures are not put enough emphasis on,and so on.Finally, according to the representation status quo of factive verbs, this thesis combines The Theory of Norms and Exploitations and Cognitive Construal Theory to put forward targeted principles, including corpus-based principle,norms-exploited principle,users-centered principle, and factivity-highlighted principle to improve the microstructure representational modes of factive verbs in Chinese-English dictionaries.Analyzing the microstructure of factive verbs in Chinese-English dictionaries is conducive to improving not only the status quo of dictionary representational modes but also the quality of dictionary compilation, and promoting users’ cognition and acquisitions. In the meanwhile,it also promotes and perfects the knowledge of lexicography to a certain extent, deepens the research on lexicography, and enriches the discipline theories of lexicography.
