Foreigner-oriented Chinese-English learner’s dictionaries(hereinafter referred to as FCELDS)are Chinese learner’s dictionaries for English native speakers.It is one of the important functions of foreigner-oriented learner’s dictionaries to reflect the syntactic information of verbs.However,the current FCELDS are inadequate in presenting the syntactic information of verbs.Factive verbs have obvious syntactic-semantic features.However,the existing FCELDS fail to fully present the features of factive verbs.Based on the syntactic-semantic features of Chinese and English factive verbs and combined with the theoretical basis of Construction Grammar and the principles of dictionary compilation,this paper attempts to improve the syntactic representation of factive verbs in FCELDS.To this end,this paper tries to answer the following questions: A.How does this study accurately extract modern Chinese factive verbs? B.What are the deficiencies with the syntactic representation of factive verbs in FCELDS? C.What is the mechanism of Construction Grammar on the syntactic-semantic features of factive verbs? D.How does this study improve the syntactic representation of factive verbs in FCELDS? By answering the above questions,the research ideas of this paper are further clarified.First of all,based on the two test formats of“对于+某个事件,说话人(主语)+是+叙实谓词的态度(for+events,speaker(subject)+be+factive verbs(adjective form))”and“对于/关于+宾语小句(这一事实/事情/情况),说话人(主语)+(已经)+叙实动词+了(for(the fact that)+clausal-object,speaker(subject)+factive verbs(past tense/perfect tense))”,and combined with a series of supplementary testing steps,this paper carried out an accurate identification of the Chinese factive verbs in The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(7th Edition),and finally obtained 63 Chinese factive verbs.Based on the 63 Chinese factive verbs obtained,three FCELDS are investigated,and the problems in presenting factive verbs syntactic information are summarized.Next,on the theoretical level,this paper studies the construction of Chinese and English factive verbs,constructs Chinese-English factive constructions and their box diagrams,and uses the box diagram figure to elaborate the“syntactic-semantic-pragmatic”and valence information of Chinese and English factive constructions.Finally,based on the syntacticsemantic features of Chinese and English factive verbs and the analysis of the factive constructions,this paper puts forward some suggestions and tries to present the syntactic representation of factive verbs in FCELDS.This study has carried out a discussion of factive verbs at the theoretical and practical levels.Under the syntactic representation mode of factive verbs proposed in this paper,the form and arrangement of exemplifications are more consistent with the cognitive input rules of users.When using exemplifications,sentences are mainly used to present the basic,complete and typical usage of factive verbs.This study also unifies the representation mode of information such as part-of-speech tagging,interpretation,and usage notes,making the syntactic representation of factive verbs more systematic and scientific.In theory,this study is conducive to the theoretical construction and improvement of the syntactic representation mode in the FCELDS,and in practice provides specific guidance and direction for the compilation of Chinese-English factive verbs in the FCELDS. |
