Abstract/Summary:
This is a translation project report on Chapter 2 of Soft City: Building Density for Everyday Life. The source text is written by David Sim,a British Architect.Focusing on humanism, this book gives readers advice on the development of human-centered cities from various perspectives. In Chapter 2,the author mainly gives a description about residential building and urban mobility in urban environments with high density. With illustrations of building a soft city in a simple and low-tech way,the readers can get recognition of walk-up building height and street planning, which are of great value for the community integration and agreeableness of neighborhoods. The translation of this source text is helpful to enhancing Chinese readers’ understanding of the soft city opening up new horizons for readers engaged in or interested in urban ecological construction. This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter 1 gives a general introduction to the translation project, including its background, significance and the structure of this translation report.Chapter 2 is an analysis of the source text, including the author introduction, main contents and features of the source text.As the source text is mostly concerned with city planning, building and road design,it can be categorized into informative text. The source text also has an interesting but professional language. Therefore,it is important for the translator to apply corresponding translation strategies and methods.Chapter 3 introduces the theoretical basis, including the introduction and application of Newmark’s Communicative Translation theory.Taking Communicative Translation theory as his theoretical basis, the translator explores its guiding role in translation process with practice cases.Chapter 4 discusses the translation difficulties and their solutions.Guided by Communicative Translation theory, the translator has analyzed the key points and translation difficulties such as terms, abstract words and long complex sentences by adopting techniques like annotation, addition, omission, conversion, inversion, division.Chapter 5 gives a conclusion of gains from the project, and problems unsolved.
