This is a report on interpreting internship. The author served as an intern in Regional Sales Division 5(South China Division),FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Company Ltd.from 10 August to 10 October,2020.During her term of service, the author was responsible for whispering from Chinese to English during corporate meetings. The report adopts the “Understanding,Memory,Expression and Emergency Response” framework to summarize and analyze the mistakes and flaws in her product in simultaneous interpreting and categorizes them into four groups, namely 1)not being able to comprehend the words, phrases and structures and context of the source speech;2)weak short-term memory and long-term memory;3)being unable to express in a way that is faithful to the source, idiomatic or flexible in the target language;and 4)not being able to use emergency response tactics including anticipation, the delay of response, generalization and paraphrasing. The author reaches a conclusion on how to improve the interpretation quality based on the analysis of the problems,in the hope of providing lessons to interpreters. The report is in four parts. The first part introduces the background of the internship and the source speech, and the purposes and methodology of writing the report. The second part introduces the theoretical framework of “Understanding,Memory,Expression and Emergency Response”,including its origin and related theories to support the framework. The third part uses real cases during the author’s internship to analyze the problems and flaws of the product in Chinese to English whispering and categorizes them into four groups, namely “understanding, memory, expression and emergency response”.The final part states the customer feedback and self-review based on standardized scales.A summary is reached to suggest what interpreters can work on to improve interpreting skills and become more professional and qualified.
