Qi Wang is a masterpiece of the well-known Chinese writer Ah Cheng and the initiation of the root-seeking literature. It is an important work in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. It contains reflections on modern western culture and an understanding of traditional Chinese culture.Culture-loaded words are an important carrier of culture.Their English translation studies are important to the spread of Chinese traditional culture and the translation practice of Chinese modern and contemporary novels.Existing translation studies are mostly case studies, and most of the research perspectives are based on traditional Chinese culture, lacking a more detailed and comprehensive analysis. From the perspective of the adaptation theory, this article contrasts the culture-loaded words in W.J.F Jenner’s translation and Bonnie S.Mc Dougall’s2010 revision from the four aspects of context, structure, dynamics, and salience. The study finds that Mc Dougall makes full use of variability, negotiation and adaptability of language to preserve the form and meaning of culture-loaded words, while Jenner makes great use of negotiability to deal with the translation of culture-loaded words. The reasons for the difference are reflected in two aspects:dynamics and salience.Mc Dougall combines with the development of the Internet, readers’ acceptance, and the scope of Chinese cultural dissemination in the translation process. She uses some translation techniques such as italic, brackets, addition and variation translation to deal with the translation of culture-loaded words. The Chinese culture is kept intact and conveyed faithfully. In contrast,Jenner uses omission and free translation to deal with the translation, conforming to the English culture, not as flexible as Mc Dougall’s translation. This paper uses the adaptation theory to contrast the translation of culture-loaded words in the two English versions, which will help to promote the spread of traditional Chinese culture.Mc Dougall’s translation thoughts and translation techniques have a great significance for the research and translation practice of modern and contemporary literature.
