Hu Shi is an important litterateur, theorist in the history of Chinese modern and contemporary literature and the outstanding diplomat at that time.He advocated the New Culture Movement and literary revolution. The movement “sorting out the national heritage” promoted the popularization of vernacular Chinese, and had a profound influence on the history of modern Chinese literature. He used to serve as an ambassador to the United States and made active publications for China and the anti-Japanese war.In the process, the main means he took was speech.Different from other ambassadors,Hu Shi’s diplomatic activities were more aimed at the common American people, and his speeches were mainly aimed at the American people. His speech is a kind of cultural communication activity,in which,as the subject of communication,he exerts a certain obvious influence on the audience. This paper mainly uses the “5W” model of journalism and communication to study Hu Shi’s speeches during his tenure as Ambassador in the United States.First of all,the author collected part of his speeches and divided them into two parts, literature and society, politics and diplomacy. Then the author analyzed the content of Hu’s speech from the reason he addressed the speech in America as an ambassador.Through a detailed analysis of the speech, the main direction and focal point of Hu Shi’s diplomatic publicity is publicizing Chinese traditional culture and China’s anti-Japanese war for democracy and world peace.Secondly,by sorting out the reports of Hu Shi’s speeches in mainstream American newspapers at that time, this paper analyzes the effects and shortcomings of Hu Shi’s cultural communication through speeches in diplomatic activities.
