Abstract/Summary:
This thesis intends to compare Chinese and English diplomatic speech discourse from the perspective of Halliday's Systematic Functional Linguistics, and find out the similarities and differences between the two kinds of discourse. The purpose of this study is to contribute to activities of intercultural communication, translation, writing, etc.Systematic Functional Linguistics is one of the comparatively influential linguistic schools within China at present. Many people of linguistic circles, translation circles and those of the same trade and occupation apply theories of Systematic Functional Linguistics to the study of English and Chinese contrast and description, translation, discourse analysis, and have achieved gratifying results. Although many people use Systematic Functional Linguistics to do discourse analysis, there are not so many people who use it in the comparison of English and Chinese diplomatic speech discourse.Therefore, in order to reveal the communicative function of the two languages, and show their differences in linguistic and rhetoric art, it is necessary to conduct this research.Halliday's Systematic Functional Linguistics attaches great importance to studying communicative activities of inter-organism, to studying language from social, cultural and anthropological perspectives. It is strongly context-oriented and function-oriented. All these are exactly suitable for this particular communicative form of diplomatic speech. And its "approximative" or "probabilistic" thought provides inspiration of methodology for this study.This thesis mainly carries out a macro and comprehensive comparison and description of Chinese and English diplomatic speech discourses from theperspective of the three metafunctions-----ideational function, interpersonalfunction and discourse function.
