English Reading Obstacles And Its Corresponding Strategies In Senior High School

Abstract/Summary:
As is known to us all,English is a basic language skill for senior high school students.Learning English well for senior high school students is the cornerstone for them to enter universities and adapt to the society.And reading teaching is the core of English teaching in senior high school.Therefore,this study aims to find out the senior high school students’ English reading obstacles,and put forward some feasible countermeasures and suggestions.The author carried out the survey in Hefei 168 senior high school and used a variety of methods for investigation.On the basis of previous research,the author divided senior high school students’ English reading obstacles into language obstacles and non-language obstacles.After careful investigation,the author found that vocabulary,grammar,theme and cultural background are the main English obstacles for senior high school students.The theoretical framework of this research is Schema Theory.If Schema Theory can be used to guide students’ English reading,it will play a key role in the understanding of the connotation,content and overall context of the article,so as to achieve the best reading effect.According to the investigation,the causes of senior high school students themselves include both direct and indirect aspects.The direct reasons include: weak basic knowledge;lack of discourse analysis ability;lack of extracurricular reading;lack of reading strategies;lack of thinking in English;students’ weak learning ability.Indirect reasons include: the bad learning attitude;lack of internal learning motivation.For teachers,the reasons include: vocabulary teaching is out of context;grammar teaching is boring;lack of guidance to students’ reading strategies.Finally,on the basis of analyzing the reasons,the author comes up with corresponding suggestions for teachers and students from six aspects.In terms of vocabulary,the greatest problem for senior high school students is the short of vocabulary.Thus,the author suggests students: learning vocabulary by chunks and word-formation,accumulating vocabulary through reading and keeping diary.And the author suggests teachers: to use word-formation to teach vocabulary;to use auditory media to assist teaching;to set some interesting games in vocabulary teaching.In terms of grammar,the author suggests students: to learn grammar through sentence patterns;to develop English sense by reading more;to strengthen the learning of sentence patterns;to seek help from dictionaries.The author suggests teachers: to use induction method and situation method in grammar teaching;to use oral formulas to assist grammar teaching;to set up a grammar study group;to strengthen grammar learning by writing and role-play.In terms of discourse,the author suggests students: pay attention to the first and last paragraphs and the topic sentences consciously;learn discourse knowledge systematically.The author suggests teachers: teachers should teach students rich discourse knowledge;teachers should set up some reading appreciation classes.In terms of reading strategies,the author suggests students: learn reading strategies and their use skills systematically.For teachers: give students the correct guidance of reading strategies;carry out some targeted exercise on reading strategies.In terms of reading motivation,the author suggests that students should try to read English materials that they are interested in.For the teachers,the author gives these suggestions: teachers should use some medias to motivate senior high school students’ reading interests;teachers set up reading interest groups.In terms of reading habits,the author consider that students should cultivate the habits of English reading outside of the class and have a good learning attitude.The highlight of the research is the combination of testing method,questionnaire method and interview method.Relatively speaking,the research method is scientific and objective.In addition,not only students,but also teachers are taken into account in the analysis of the causes of English reading obstacles.In conclusion,this paper analyzes the existing English reading obstacles of senior high school students,and it also analyzes the causes of reading obstacles and gives corresponding strategies.The author hopes that this study can help senior high school students to solve the existing reading obstacles,improve their English reading ability and increase their confidence in English reading.
