| Xu Yuanchong,as a great translator of the Tang Dynasty, has made great contributions to the English translation of Chinese Tang poetry and its dissemination abroad. However,in recent years, the research on Mr.Xu Yuanchong has mainly focused on his translation theory and practice, while there are few studies on his translation of Tang poetry into English.Meanwhile, few of them involve the discussion on the English translation of Tang poems from the perspective of the characteristics of Tang poems, and there are no works on Xu Yuanchong’s translation misinterpretations. The translation of Tang poetry into English has a long history, with far-reaching significance, complex features and rich practices. The sound, meaning and form of Tang poems seem to be obstacles to the translatability of Tang poems, while Xu Yuanchong,as a representative figure of rhyme-style poetry translation, has made great achievements. His translation theories have huge system and various contents, and the translation skills and strategies are flexible and changeable, which have made Mr.Xu Yuanchong make reasonable choices among many linguistic contradictions, stylistic contradictions and rhythmic contradictions in order to achieve an effective translation of Tang poetry.Up to now, most of the studies on the translation of Tang poetry have focused on translation theories and practice, but neglected Tang poetry which is equivalent to "translation".As a result, the phenomenon of misinterpretations and mistranslations of Tang poetry is not uncommon, which is a great loss in the development of the dissemination and translation of Tang poetry. At the same time, the cultural system of "original text" does not show initiative to the "translator".There is little overlap between the two,"indifference" between the two sides forming, which leads to misinterpretations and mistranslations.Based on the above problems, the article has summarized four main reasons for misinterpretations: the limitations of the subject background, the unfamiliarity with the special expressive skills of Tang poetry, the unfamiliarity with the special usage of Tang poetry allusions, and the lack of understanding of the special words in Tang poetry, and has given examples to prove it.These problems are particularly evident in foreign translators, which highlights the necessity of translating and introducing Tang poetry by native translators. This paper clearly defines whether misinterpretations occur or not,and there are also misinterpretations in Xu’s translation of Tang poetry, which need not be tabooed for the wise. The author chooses Xu Yuanchong’s misinterpretations for analysis and discussion. At the same time, the paper focuses on the construction of the foreign image of Tang poetry, trying to reduce the restrictive factors in its shaping process, and enhance the "soft power" of Chinese culture. At the same time,we should attach importance to the ontological status of Tang poetry so as to balance and coordinate the roles of the source language and the target language, and gradually recover the negative consequences of the lack of emphasis on Tang poetry. |
