The Art of Readable Writing, first published in 1949,was written by Dr.Rudolf Flesch. The main idea of this book is how to improve readability in the process of writing. The purpose of researching on readability is to make the native speakers understand their language better. However,as a book of great significance to writing, there is no Chinese version of this book. The translation material is extracted from chapter 17 to 21 of the book, with a total of 12,131 English words, including the reasons why readers make mistakes in reading, the importance of words, the origins of plain talk, how to modify your writing, and the fact that writing is the author’s language.Through the translation, the translator found that the language of the book is relatively easy to understand. But the difficult point is that the author cites a large number of examples to support his views. These examples involve a wide range of fields and various types of texts,in addition to the lack of context and their complex structure, which undoubtedly brought some difficulties to translation. The translator chose the framework of “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”(hereinafter referred to as CEA framework)put forward by Professor Li Changshuan as the theoretical basis.Accurate comprehension is the prerequisite in the process of translation. It is necessary for the translator to understand the examples the author gives. Then the problems were solved by using some translation methods and CEA framework. And the translator should express the meaning of the original text as much as possible and make adjustments so as to achieve the best effect. After finishing this practice, the translator has a deeper understanding of the translation of academic texts and accumulates some experience for the further translation. There is no doubt that translating this book can provide reference value for improving the readability of writing.
