This translation practice material is selected from the first chapter of Wang Yulang’s The Study on the Civilization of the Northeast River Basin,which is an informative text with a total of 13,064 Chinese characters.The content of the text involves the preliminary study of the Bohai tombs in Heilongjiang River Basin.Through the text,we can understand the culture of the Bohai State and the domestic and foreign scholars’ research on the Bohai State.This report is divided into four parts: The first part briefly introduces the background and significance of translation project;In the second part,the author reviews the translation process from three aspects:preliminary preparation,mid-term translation and post-proofreading.The third part is a case study,which is the core content of this translation practice report.The author discusses and analyzes the translation methods of archeological,historical and cultural words and sentences under the guidance of Skopos Theory of Function.The translation methods of words mainly include literal translation,free translation and transliteration,and the translation methods of long sentences and ancient texts mainly include splitting,adding and converting.In the fourth part,the author summarizes the whole translation report and points out the shortcomings in this translation.Through this translation practice,the translator hopes to sum up the translation skills and strategies suitable for archeological and historical texts,so as to provide reference for future translation activities.At the same time,it is hoped that by translating Chinese text into English,cultural exchanges will be promoted and more research materials will be provided for foreign Bohai State scholars. |
