A Report On The Chinese Translation Of The Magic Misfits(Excerpts)

The text selected for this translation practice is an excerpt from the novel The Magic Misfits by American writer Neil Patrick Harris.The novel was written in colloquial English with a humorous scent and contains a lot of cultural-loaded and unique expressions,which makes the content easy to understand but hard to translate.When translating,the present author employs Yan Fu’s "faithfulness,expressiveness,and elegance" as the theoretical guidance.Based on the writing characteristics of this fiction as well as the help of various translation techniques,the present author strives to achieve concise translation.This report briefly describes the source,characteristics and structure of the project.It analyzes the language style and cultural content of the original text with the reference to the characteristics of the parallel text.Under the guidance of Yan’s theory,it focuses on the translation cases of the text in terms of the lexical,syntactic and discourse level.Through this translation practice,the present author has deepened his understanding of translation theory,and achieved a better understanding of children’s literature and other literary translation.It is hoped that this translation practice will enable future researchers to use traditional Chinese translation practice theories to analyze and research texts in which Chinese is the target language.
