| Cloze is an important type of question in the English Test of College Entrance Examination.It mainly tests students’ comprehensive competencies to use language based on the understanding of text,which requires students not only to have a good command of vocabulary knowledge,but also to have the ability to correctly choose words according to the context and grammatical rules.It can be seen that vocabulary knowledge and grammatical awareness are important factors affecting students’ cloze scores.The literature shows that domestic scholars have studied vocabulary knowledge and grammatical awareness from multiple perspectives,but there are few researches on the correlation among vocabulary knowledge,grammatical awareness and cloze test scores of senior high school students.Therefore,this study carried out an empirical study on the vocabulary knowledge and grammatical awareness of senior high school students,aiming to explore the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and grammatical awareness,as well as their influence on cloze test scores.With the methods of literature research,questionnaire investigation and statistical analysis,the study investigates 188 senior high school students in a middle school in Zhangzhou,Fujian Province,using the vocabulary knowledge test and the grammatical awareness test as research tools,and aims to explore the following three questions:(1)What is the overall level of senior high school students’ English vocabulary knowledge?(2)What is the overall level of senior high school students’ English grammatical awareness?(3)Is there any correlation among vocabulary knowledge,grammatical awareness and cloze test scores of senior high school students?Through statistical analysis of the data,the results indicate that:(1)The overall level of senior high school students’ vocabulary knowledge is relatively low(m=70.57),and the level of senior high school students’ vocabulary depth knowledge(m=39.19)is higher than that of vocabulary breadth knowledge(m=31.38).In other words,senior high school students’ ability to accurately understand and collocate words is higher than their number of vocabularies.(2)The level of senior high school students’ grammatical awareness is also relatively low(m=68.09),and the scoring rate of the three levels from high to low is: perception(m=15.39,73.29%),attention(m=24.98,59.48%),understanding(m=27.71,43.98%).(3)There is significant correlation among English vocabulary knowledge,grammatical awareness and cloze test scores of senior high school students.There is a significantly positive correlation between senior high school students’ English vocabulary knowledge and grammatical awareness(r=0.667**).There is also a significantly positive correlation between vocabulary knowledge and cloze test scores(r=0.550**).And there is a significantly positive correlation between grammatical awareness and cloze scores(r=0.625**).In addition,senior high school students’ vocabulary knowledge and grammatical awareness have a direct impact on their cloze scores.Among them,grammatical awareness can predict 39.1% of cloze scores,vocabulary knowledge can predict 30.3% of cloze scores,and the combination of grammatical awareness and vocabulary knowledge can predict 42.3% of cloze scores.Based on the above research results,the author proposes some teaching suggestions from the aspects of vocabulary input and grammar teaching,so as to improve senior high school students’ vocabulary knowledge level,enhance their grammatical awareness and improve their cloze test scores. |
