In English teaching,grammar plays a vital part in advancing students’ successful use of English.The regular grammar teaching model lays too much stress on the form and knowledge of grammar,which ignores concrete contexts,purpose and ideographic function of grammar itself.The PACE teaching model,proposed by Adair-Hauck and Donato in 1994,has been seen as a more suitable teaching model that was designed based on the whole language approach.To force students to have a good command of grammatical knowledge as well as make progress in their ability of grammar using is the ultimate goal of the PACE teaching model.The whole language approach requires curriculum design to be based on the student-centered concept and the effective combination of students and teachers,and the four steps of PACE teaching model are gradually constructed based on the whole language approach.Based on the guidance of the whole language theory and input enhancement theory,this study tries to explore the following problems through teaching experiments:(1)What is the effect of PACE teaching model based on the whole language approach on high school students’ English grammar achievements?(2)What is the effect of PACE teaching model based on the whole language approach on high school students’ English grammar learning strategies?In this study,two parallel classes in senior grade one in Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were selected as the research subjects,and12 weeks of teaching experiment was carried out in these two classes.Before the experiment,a pre-test on the English grammar level of the students in these two classes was conducted to make sure that the significant difference does not exist in these two natural classes.The experimental class uses the PACE teaching model based on the whole language approach to teach grammar.During the experiment process,the teaching steps were carried out according to the four steps of PACE teaching model.The conventional grammar teaching model: PPP teaching model is adopted in the control class.After the experiment,the author does a data acquisition through research instruments,that is students’ test papers,students’ questionnaires and students’ interview.Finally,this research uses SPSS20.0 to analyze and compare the collected data.The results indicate that the application of PACE teaching model based on the whole approach in senior high school English grammar teaching can significantly improve students’ English grammar achievements and increase the frequency of students’ use of grammar learning strategies.The research looks forward to great expectation from future English grammar teaching,first of all,teachers can take advantage of the characteristics of PACE teaching model to improve English grammar teaching,such as selecting authentic teaching materials to stimulate students’ interest and attention.Besides that,teachers can focus on cultivating students’ grammar learning strategies in grammar teaching,such as trying to improve students’ affective strategies by giving students encouragement,support and inspiration.
