In this translation practice, the translator chooses The Life: The Sea,a novel written by famous contemporary Chinese writer Mai Jia,as her translation material.Published in 2019,this novel is composed of 20 chapters. The first two chapters of the novel are served as the source text of this report.According to relevance-theoretic translation theory, translation involves double ostensive-inferential processes. The first round of communication is between the translator and the writer, and the second is between the translator and readers of target language. For this reason, the translator is expected not only to create the relevance between himself and the source text to develop an adequate understanding of its content, but also to establish the relevance between target language and target audiences to make them obtain the same contextual effect as source-language readers do.A large quantity of folk languages and rhetorical devices are used in the novel.Such features, for one thing, serve to vividly depict the image of characters. For another, they pose challenges on the translator to reproduce the language feature and writing style of the source text.Besides,in terms of the implied expressions in literary works, the translator also made her efforts to figure out the communicative intention of the writer so that explicit expressions can be made. Therefore,in the translation, the translator has adopted translation methods in a flexible way on the basis of the principles of direct and indirect translation to achieve the optimal relevance.Mai Jia’s works have received great attention in the English-speaking world, which has significant implications on the implementation of the “going out” strategy of Chinese culture. Many domestic scholars, critics and mainstream media have also highly appreciated his works. In addition, the English versions of his works have attracted many postgraduates majoring in translation to take them as the research object for thesis writing. Therefore, the translator’s translation report is of great practical significance to some degree.
