High school English teaching,with its wide coverage and deep influence on students’ future English learning,has become the key link of the whole English teaching.English reading plays a very important role in this process,because it is conductive for students to improve language ability,develop thinking quality and cultural awareness.But in the examination-oriented English teaching mode,the grammar and vocabulary-centered English reading teaching method and the texts without authentic English in the current textbooks make it hard to develop "whole book" reading strategies.So inadequate reading experience and improper reading guidance from teachers leads to students’ inefficient reading and hinders their interest in reading.Graded authentic readers,with a broad range of topics for English learning as well as reading materials for learners at all language levels,are widely used in the extensive English reading in college.Literature Circle Model,with group cooperation as the main feature,has been favored by Chinese reading teaching in recent years.According to the requirements of the reading literacy in New English Curriculum Standards(2017),based on Input Hypothesis of SLA,cooperative learning theory and theory of constructivism,the author conducted an experiment on the "Literature Circle Model" in graded authentic English readers to improve students’ reading interest,and cultivate students’ reading ability.Therefore,the research hypothesis of the research are as follows:1.High school students’ reading interest will be improved by using "Literature Circle Model" in graded authentic English readers.2.High school students’ reading ability will be improved by using "Literature Circle Model" in graded authentic English readers.With 99 sophomores in high schools as the subjects,the author conducted a 16-week teaching experiment.In the first week of the experiment,the author conducted the pretest with American Literacy Pro Lexile English Autonomous Learning Platform and questionnaire for both the experimental group and the control group,after which the experimental group students were guided to use the "Literature Circle Model" to read the graded authentic English materials and presented pre-reading introductory class,while-reading discussion class and post-reading re-creation class,while in the control group,the conventional teaching method remained unchanged.After the 16-week teaching experiment,it can be concluded that the use of Literature Circle Model in graded authentic English reading enables students to give full play to their subjective initiative in group cooperation and independent learning,thus increasing the reading interest and reading ability.Its significance in reading interest is reflected in the formation of reading habit as well as good reading experience.Its significance in reading ability is reflected in improvement of decoding ability,accumulation and expansion of language knowledge,and the improvement of reading comprehension,as well as improvement of information extraction ability and multi-thinking ability.However,the application of of Literature Circle Model in graded authentic English reading is still under exploration,and there is inevitably imperfection.The author hopes more scholars use a variety of new teaching tools to support students’ reading and enrich post-reading activities to improve students’ output ability to make this teaching approach beneficial to high school students.
