English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2017Edition)puts forwards that the courses of compulsory education should face all students,reflect the main idea of student-oriented,so that students can learn and use language in a real context.English as a tool for communication,basically speaking,the language teaching process is the process of interaction between teachers and students.English classroom teaching is mainly accomplished by the interaction between teachers and students.Nevertheless,as one of the basic elements of education,students’ talk is often ignored in the education system.As the main body of the classroom,students continue to input and output language in the process of teacher-student interaction,so as to improve their practical language ability.In recent years,in order to adapt to the reform of the new curriculum standards in our country,English teaching has emphasized the students’ practical application ability of language increasingly,and the verbal interaction between teachers and students has gradually become the main part of classroom teaching research.The improved Flanders Interaction Analysis System(i FIAS),as an important tool to investigate teacher and student talk in classroom interaction,provides an effective way for people to explore the current situation of classroom teaching.Therefore,this study is carried out on the basis of the system.This study observed 6 English listening and speaking classes with three teachers in each of two classes in a middle school in Hohhot;And the subjects of questionnaire were selected from one class of each three teachers,200 questionnaires were distributed,and 189 were effectively recovered.This study code the six teacher and student talk in the six classes by Improved Flanders Interaction Analysis System(i FIAS)which is designed by Professor Fang Haiguang and analyzes data in a qualitative and quantitative way.The thesis aims to explore the following three questions: 1.What are the characteristics of teachers’ verbal interaction in junior middle school English classroom? 2.What are the characteristics of students’ verbal interaction in junior middle school English classroom? 3.What are the factors that may affect the students’ verbal interaction in junior middle school English classroom?Through the analysis of the i FIAS analysis system,this study found that: 1.In the verbal interaction between teachers and students,the proportion of teachers’ speech in class is higher,and teachers tend to give direct influence on students.Meanwhile,the negative influence of teachers on students’ talk is more than the positive influence,and the positive classroom feedback is less.The rate of questioning in classroom is low,and the ratio of closed questions is higher than open questions.2.In the verbal interaction between teacher and students,the proportion of teachers’ speech in class is higher.And students’ initiative in teacher and student verbal interaction is weak,and students’ initiative in class needs to be improved.3.The individual differences among students,teachers’ experience,teacher’s teaching beliefs and environmental factors will affect the verbal interaction between teachers and students.In the light of the problems above,the author puts forward teaching suggestions as following: Adjust the role positioning of teachers and students so that students become the main body of the classroom and have more opportunities in classroom speech;Teachers improve their questioning skills and diversify questioning for design various classroom activities to involve students to actively participate;The classroom atmosphere should be active and create a harmonious teaching environment.The significance of this research is to intuitively reflect the specific process of classroom teacher and student verbal interaction and its problems,propose optimization suggestions,and also provide follow-up researchers with a set of operable verbal interaction observation methods for junior middle school English classrooms.Hopefully,it can provide reference for further development.
