A Case Study Of Chinese Parallel Structure In C-E Consecutive Interpreting Under The Functional Equivalence Theory

Under the Functional Equivalence Theory,through the case analysis on a professional interpreter’s C-E interpretation of the parallel structure in political context and a comparison of consecutive interpretation on the same parallel structure between a professional interpreter and a trainee interpreter based on source text from meaning,logic and structure perspectives,this research aims at studying and summing up the CE interpretation skills applied by the professional interpreter when dealing with the parallel structure in Chinese.With research results,trainee interpreters can learn from the professional interpreter’s equivalence performance and consecutive interpretation skills for the parallel structure in terms of functional equivalence.In this study,Premier Li’s answers in press conference in 2020,as a kind of political utterance,have been used as the research material for the case analysis on the Chinese parallel structure,to infer interpreting guidelines used by Zhang Lu to interpret Chinese parallel structure with different linguistic features under the Functional Equivalence Theory.And major findings can be briefly as: For equivalence on the whole,most cases can be consecutively interpreted by Zhang Lu into parallel structure in English regarding meaning,logic and structure;Among all typical cases,it’s inferred that such skills as literal interpretation,omission,generalization and free interpretation are used by Zhang Lu when she deals with the Chinese parallel structure in C-E consecutive interpretation.
