Portfolio self-assessment is an important part of formative assessment.It is of great significance to use portfolio self-assessment in English reading teaching for students’ English learning.Therefore,this study applies portfolio self-assessment to junior middle school English reading teaching,aiming to explore the impact of portfolio self-assessment on junior middle school students’ English learning.This study attempts to answer the following questions:1.What is the influence of reading portfolio self-assessment on junior middle school students’ English reading level?2.What is the influence of reading portfolio self-assessment on junior middle school students’ interest in English reading?3.What is the influence of reading portfolio self-assessment on junior middle school students’ self-reflection ability?In order to answer the research questions,80 students from two parallel classes in a middle school in Haigang District,Qinhuangdao city were selected as the research objects for a 10-week teaching experiment.During the whole experiment,the control class adopted the traditional summative assessment method,while the experimental class was evaluated by the traditional summative assessment method and reading portfolio self-assessment.Before and after the experiment,this research tested the reading level of students in the two parallel classes to learn about the change of their English reading level.This research also found out whether the students had increased interest in English reading and whether their self-reflection ability had improved through questionnaires and interviews.At the end of the experiment,SPSS24.0 was used for statistical analysis of the data results.It was found that the post-test scores of the experimental class were significantly improved after using the reading portfolio self-assessment for 10 weeks,while those of the control class were not significantly changed,and there were significant differences between the post-test scores of two classes.It shows that the reading portfolio self-assessment can improve the English reading level of junior middle school students.By analyzing the questionnaires about the interest in English reading learning and the ability of self-reflection conducted in the two classes before and after the experiment,it is found that the students of the experimental class are more interested in English reading after using the reading portfolio self-assessment than before the experiment.The interview results also confirm the questionnaire results.But there was no significant change in the control class.It shows that reading portfolio self-assessment can improve the interest of junior middle school students in English reading and their ability of self-reflection.Based on the research findings,this study proposes several implications of reading portfolio self-assessment for junior middle school English reading teaching and learning.
