This report is conducted upon the C-E translation of the academic paper “China-US Trade Friction from the Perspective of International Leadership”,excerpted from the journal ChinaUS Trade: Imbalance and Friction—International Relations Review(Volume 15),published by the Institute of International Relations & Public Affairs,Fudan University in 2014.Through translation,Chinese scholars’ opinions towards the China-US trade friction can be better conveyed to the international community. This translation material is characterized by a considerable number of long sentences, which are constructed by meaning groups with implicit logical relation. Therefore, translation difficulties are derived from the problems of how to tease out and analyze the implicit logical relation, and how to convert them into the target language in a proper way.Specifically, the translation difficulties are divided into the following three aspects:(1)difficulties in translating sentences with implicit additive relation;(2)difficulties in translating sentences with implicit causal relation;(3)difficulties in translating sentences with implicit adversative relation.According to Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory, communicative translation refers to “attempting to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained from the readers of the original(Newmark,2001b: 39).” With the focus on conveying information according to the language, culture and pragmatic forms of the target language, instead of merely mechanically and literally translating the original text, communicative translation theory stresses the expressiveness rather than the form.During the translating process, translators should adopt flexible strategies to enable the structure and form to be as close as possible to the convention of the target language, which sheds light on translating sentences with implicit logical relation in Chinese. In light of communicative translation theory, this report puts forward the following tactics to tackle the above problems when translating sentences with implicit logical relation in Chinese. The findings are as follows.(1)In terms of difficulties in translating sentences with implicit additive relation, tactics such as adding conjunctive components and adding adverbs may be adopted;(2)in terms of difficulties in translating sentences with implicit causal relation, tactics such as converting the compound sentences into complex sentences with appositive clause and converting the compound sentences into complex sentences with adverbial clause may be adopted;(3)in terms of difficulties in translating sentences with implicit adversative relation, tactics such as adding contrastive components and adding comparative components may be adopted. This translation report is hopefully to enrich the relevant research on the translating Chinese sentences with implicit logical relation, with the tactics put forward accordingly to lay for future references. |
