A Report On Simulated E-C Consecutive Interpreting Of The Talk Show Live From WWDC 2019

The colloquial discourse of the Talk Show Live from “Apple’s 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference(WWDC)” elaborates a rich sense of verbal humor in this sci-tech project,which is the main obstacle in this consecutive interpretation(CI),in that the functionalists hold that a good translation requires interpreters not only convey the information faithfully,but also take the communicative intention required by interpretation itself into full consideration.Therefore,in this project,to make the target audience receive the humorous intention of the target language becomes a great challenge for the interpreter,while the specific difficulties facing interpreters when delivering humor can be divided into three categories based on the Register Shift Theory:(1)Field shifts in interpreting humor;(2)Tenor shifts in interpreting humor;(3)Mode shifts in interpreting humor.In the academic field,Memetics has been widely used in studying humorous discourse,as it can explain the humor mechanism in Chinese crosstalk,a similar style as foreign talk shows,and propose interpreting tactics for different forms of humor.Therefore,guided by Memetics,in order to achieve the communicative intention of the speaker,the interpreter puts forward the following tactics in view of the mentioned difficulties.To interpret field shifts,the coping tactics are:(1)Parodic Diction;(2)Mimicking Internet Catchwords;to interpret tenor shifts,the coping tactics are:(3)Mood Conversion;(4)Adoption of Internet Buzz Phrases;and for interpreting mode shifts,the related tactics are:(5)Personification of Rhemes;(6)Idiomaticization Strategy.This thesis is expected to provide a better guidance to the interpretation of such kind of talk shows and render a referential significance to some extent.
