The Study Of Qualitative Disyllable Adjectives Acting As Adverbials

Qualitative disylable adjective is a typical kind of adjective,and the adjatives in Chinese has the function of acting as adverbials.However,not all of the qualitative disyllable adjectives could function as adverbials.On the other hand,the ability of the qualitative disyllable adjectives to be adverbials varies from one another.It has been studied in this thesis 857 disyllable adjectives from Chinese adjectives usage dictionary(Zhen,Huaide、Men,Qinghai.1991).Besides,this thesis is based on a large amount of corpus data,in hopes that the ablity of qualitative disyllable to act as adverbials would be identified,pursuing for making reasonable explanations.In this thesis studied the adjectives that are in the position of adverbial from the perpective of syntax,symetics and pramatics.Syntactically,exhaustive research has been done to generate that kind of disyllable adjectives on the world list which could and could not be placed in the position of adverbial.We also generated the capability of the disyllable adjectives to being in the adverbial position judging from whether there is a mark “de” when the disyllable adjectives act as adverbials.Semantically,it has been categorized the semantic types and the subcategory of disyllable adjectives,and further came up with the symantic orientation of disyllable adverbials when acting as adverbials.Pragmatically,the corealation between subjectivization and grammaticallization was figured out from cognitive perspective,whereas the speakers’ thoughts,emotions,attitudes and perspectives were uncovered through the pragmatic presupposition in specific context.Besides,it has also been studied the corelation between syntax,semantics and pragmatics in this thesis.As matter of fact,when the syntactic position of adjectives are transformed,that is,from the position of adjective to that of adverbial,the semantic meaning and the degree of subjectivity thereof will change as well.In the meantime,subjectivization of language is one of the significant reasons that contribute to semantic evolution.Chapter one illustrated the significance and objectives of the topic,aimming at having a good knowledge of the status quo of adjectives acting as adverbials based on the fruitful study that has been done previously.The theories and methodologies to be applied,the object and scope of research,as well as the source of corpus are introduced in detial in this chapter.In chapter two,a quantitive research on disyllable adjevtives that acting as adverbials was done.Based on the types and features of disyllable adjectives that are in adverbial position,it has been anaylized the kinds of adjectives that could or could not be in the position of adverbials with regularity understanding obtained.In the first part of the chapter,exhausively studied the qualitative adjectives as well as status adjectives that act as adverbials,so as to compare their ablity to be in the position of adverbials.The second part of the thesis generated the disyllable adjectives that couldn’t be in the position of adverbials accroding to the study of corpus,in order to come up with the general character thereof.In chapter three,disyllable adjectives were semantically analyzed in two aspects.On one hand,coupled with the studies that have been done previously,we categorized disyllable adjectives into three main classes,namely behavior-oriented,object-oriented and people-oriented.In addition,subcategories of semantics were figured out in accordance with the earmarks of adjctives.On the other hand,semantic orientation of quatlitative disyllable adjectives was uncovered while the structures of semantic orientation were revealed depending on the study of corups.It was illustrated in the fourth chapter the issues of subjectivization of disyllable adjectives from cognitive pragmatics perspective.Firstly,the subjective quantity of disyllable adjectives was analyzed,while the similarities of disyllable adjectives of high level of subjective quantity were obtained.Besides,we came up with the transformation of subjective quantity and semantics meaning thereof,comparing the position of adjectives and adverbials.Furthermore,the process of subjectivization and grammaticalization was analyzed diachronically whereas the the inner relationship thereof was unveiled.Ultimately,the pragmatics presuppositon and the motivation of speaker behind qualitative disyllable adjectives were studied in specific context,analyizing the pragmatics subjectivization thereof.Chapter five is the chapter of epilogue which concludes the main points of this thesis,exploring the areas that would acquire breakthroughs in the long run,looking forward to the future of the adverbial adjectives study in academia.
