The construction of private gardens in Rome began in the middle of the Republic,and,private gardens had spread all over Rome in the early Roman Empire among which the construction of gardens in Italy was the most common phenomenon.As an important space of Roman private life and a place of spiritual sustenance,garden is closely related to Roman culture,involving all aspects of art,religion,architecture,economy and life.Based on the historical records of ancient Rome and the archaeological evidence of gardens in Italy,this paper analyzes the types,spatial layout and decorative arts of Roman private gardens.The purpose of this paper is to explore the development,production and life of Italian private gardens in the early period of the Empire,so as to analyze the connotation of gardens in Roman culture and discuss the influence of private gardens on Roman society.This paper consists of two parts.The first part is the introduction,according to the data collected at present,combs the current research situation domestically and abroad,analyzes the significance of the topic,innovation and research methods,and expounds the research status of private gardens in the early Roman Empire.The second part is the main body of the thesis.The first chapter discusses the concept of Roman private garden and defines the scope of research.Taking time as a clue,this paper analyzes the origin and development of Roman gardens,probes into the reasons for the prosperity of Roman private gardens in the Early Empire,and divides the private gardens into three different types: palace gardens,urban residential gardens and Villa gardens.The second chapter discusses the architectural arts and decorative arts of private gardens from the perspective of architectural facilities,layout,decoration and design and maintenance of gardens,so as to establish a new understanding of Roman architecture and garden space.By introducing the production and life in the private gardens in Roman Italy,the third chapter expounds the important roles of the private gardens in the daily life of the Romans,it also discusses the influence of this luxury lifestyle on the politics,economy and culture of Rome.the fourth chapter explore the natural concepts,aesthetic ideas and values reflected by the Roman private gardens.It also discusses the impacts of luxury life in the gardens on Roman morality.
