The works of the famous Chinese American writer Maxine Hong Kingston focus on the living conditions of the Chinese American group and reproduce the survival crisis of this group of people. This theme is particularly prominent in the three novels The Woman Warrior,China Man and Tripmaster Monkey: His Fake Book. The Woman Warrior and China Man depict the survival of Chinese Americans in American society, presenting intense conflicts between individuals and society.Tripmaster Monkey: His Fake Book shows the process where individuals respond to conflicts and realize their ideals by returning to the group. In these three novels,Chinese Americans are struggling to survive under oppression. This conflict is more complicated due to race, cultural differences and gender discrimination. This thesis focuses on the living conditions of the Chinese groups in these three works, focuses on the unity of opposites between individuals and society in the works, and focuses on the ways Chinese individuals deal with this conflict. At present, the academia mostly explains the causes of the existence crisis from the three aspects of race, culture and gender, but from the perspective of the struggle between individuals and groups, and between individuals and managers, there are few studies on the causes of the existence crisis. Most scholars emphasize the causal link between silence and crisis, but ignore that silence is a way to deal with crisis, and ignore the important role of the combination of silence and speech. In addition, regarding cultural conflicts, the existing studies mainly analyze the author’s attitude toward Chinese and American culture, criticizing Chinese culture and identifying with American culture. However,it can be found that she holds a critical attitude toward part of Chinese and American culture and a positive attitude toward part of Chinese and American culture when going deep into culture. This article intends to study the above problems from three levels: the survival crisis of the novel, the characters’ conflict resolution strategies, and the survival destination. The survival crisis of the characters in the works stems from the intense conflict between individuals and society, and they fight against ethnic conflicts and family conflicts through the interweaving of silence and speech,to solve homesickness with hard work, and to eliminate cultural conflicts with a holistic thinking. They are returning to family and society.Reconciliation with conflict is achieved in the group. This article attempts to prove that the survival crisis of the characters in Maxine Hong Kingston’s works stems from the intense conflict between the individual and the society, and the way to resolve the conflict is to return to the family and the community. This article hopes to introduce the characters’ strategies to cope with conflicts through the difficult survival experiences of the Chinese descent in the work, and analyze the ideas and methods of coping with conflicts conveyed by the author, that is,to encourage people to regain their confidence in returning to their families and communities and find the true meaning of survival.
