In the National English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017edition,2020 revised),the writing part of the test format has added a new type of summary writing.In 2016,Zhejiang Province College Entrance Examination English has revised,continuation task and summary writing will appear in an alternative way.In 2017,summary writing appeared in Shanghai College Entrance Examination English test,which shows that summary writing has become a hot topic.Summary writing not only examines the students’ ability to summarize,but also examines the students’ ability to read and understand the given text,which can be regarded as a new test type combining reading and writing.Nowadays,English education aims at cultivating students’ English subject core competence.Compared with the past English curriculum standards(2013),the new English curriculum standards put forward discourse knowledge.The discourse knowledge requires students to be able to make clear the writing purpose of the narrative,expository and argumentative texts and the main textual structural features of such texts.In order to respond to the requirements of the new English curriculum standards,this study aims to select three common styles that the new curriculum standards require students to master,namely narrative,exposition and argumentation from the perspective of genre.The current study aims at exploring whether the application of the genre-based approach to summary writing teaching can improve students’ summarization ability.Qin Xiubai first introduced genre-based approach to China,and made a lot of relevant theoretical research.The genre-based approach can be divided into four steps in this paper: modeling,joint construction,independent construction and evaluation and revision by referring to the predecessors’ research.Each stage provides clear teaching steps for the teachers.In this study,students in Grade 1 from a senior high school in Shijiazhuang,Hebei Province participated in the tests and interview before and after the experiment.Data analysis was conducted with the help of SPSS.23.0.The purpose of this study aims to explore students’ attitudes towards the application of the genre-based approach to summary writing and the influence of the genre-based approach on senior high school students’ summarization performance.After three months of the teaching experiment,the results showed that the students’ summarization performance of the experimental class was significantly better than that of the control class,which indicated that the application of the genre-based approach to summary writing could indeed improve students’ ability to summarize.Most students are in favor of the genre-based approach.
