An Empirical Approach To Genre-based Summary Writing

In our country,the high school education on English is particularly important for training foreign language talents.Writing is an important part of English skills(listening,speaking,reading,writing and translating)and communicative competence so that the teaching of writing has received great attention in English education of our country.With the new reformation of college entrance examination proposed to focus on improving students' academic quality,Shanghai and Zhejiang adopted summary writing in college entrance examination.Thus,more and more educational experts and teachers focus on improving students' ability of writing English summary.However,the existing researches are mostly about college students and mainly focus on theoretical exploration.Besides,there are many researches on integrated English teaching of reading and writing,but relatively less on improving the students' ability of writing a summary.Meanwhile,there are little researches on integrated teaching of reading and writing based on genre.Therefore,based on the theories of genre and summary writing,the study aims to explore effects of teaching summary writing based on expositions and argumentations.And hope it can play an exemplary role to get more teachers to explore it.To this end,based on the different genres of the text,the author chose expositions and argumentations which are most frequently used in examinations as teaching materials to carry out a period of 16 weeks' teaching practice on students from class 1,Grade 2 in the No.1 Middle School of Pixian,Chengdu,Sichuan Province.Through the analysis of the teaching effects of the teaching cases,questionnaires and interviews,the study found that:(1)Students are interested in summary writing and know the criteria of summary writing well.However,they lacked the practical use on its features and standards;(2)Students have mastered the relevant definitions,formats,and characteristics of explanatory and argumentative texts.At the same time,the analysis and interpretation of the material's genre help students develop reading skills in searching for keywords and topic sentences and using different methods to understand different texts;(3)Students could basically analyze reading materials by using differentgenre knowledge to write a summary.And they have developed a good habit of discussing,thinking,analyzing articles to writing a summary with classmates;(4)Students need to enrich their language knowledge in that they do not know how to simplify their language during summarizing,how to express the main idea in their own language and how to extract the main idea of the article;(5)It helps students understand the scoring principles and pay real attention while writing by offering scoring standards,peer assessments and teacher's comments.Based on the above findings,the study proposes teaching suggestions:(1)To enrich genre interpretation,develop students' genre awareness to master the structure of the summary materials;(2)To develop students' ability to understand and analyze the genre,and form the habit of analyzing summary materials from the perspective of genre;(3)To enrich students' language knowledge so as to improve their express ability;(4)To strengthen the cultivation of students' paraphrase strategies so that the students can write the summary flexibly.Overall,based on three-stages and eight-steps teaching framework,the teaching method of summary writing based on the English reading materials' genre has been recognized and supported by lots of students.This also proves that high school English summary writing teaching based on different genres is feasible and effective.At the same time,in practical teaching and the feedback of teaching effects,the author also found some deficiencies,such as: the materials' genre covering only a small scope and the writing steps are some complicated.As a result,teachers and scholars are needed to continuously improve and enrich this research.
