A Report On The E-C Translation Of Women’s Poetry And Popular Culture (Excerpt)

This report is written based on the translation of “Killer Lyrics: Ai,Carol Ann Duffy,and the Media Monologue”,a chapter of Women’s Poetry and Popular Culture by Marsha Bryant.The source text focuses on the killer lyrics written by Ai(an American female poet)and Carol Ann Duffy(a British female poet)as well as the media monologue to express the contents of these lyrics.As academic texts are rich in terminology and expressions featured as abstraction and originality,this report tries to elucidate some translation strategies for the translation of academic text under the guidance of Skopos Theory,to expand the application of the theory in translating academic works,especially literary review.Therefore,by the Skopos Theory,the translator hopes to provide some theoretical supports for the translation of academic texts,as well as some reference to a certain degree for studies on English-Chinese translation of the academic works on literature.The report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One is Task Description,focusing on the background of the translation task and the linguistic features of the source text.Chapter Two is Process Description,introducing the preparations,translation process and post-translation work.Chapter Three is Theoretical Framework which gives a brief introduction to Skopos Theory,some translation methods and strategies guided by the theory and their application to academic texts.Chapter Four is Case Analysis,in which the translator selects some cases from the translation work to analyze the conducted translation strategies,such as conversion,restruction,adding connectives and formality,in dimensions of lexical level,syntactic level,textual level and stylistic level.And Chapter Five is Conclusion,in which the translator,looking back to the whole translation work,summarizes the methods and strategies under the guidance of Skopos Theory on the translation of academic works,hoping to provide some reference for the current studies of translation of academic works.
