| The translation of equipment operation and maintenance manuals practically helps to transmit the scientific and technological information,and provide guidance for equipment operation and maintenance.High-quality translations can help users operate equipment effectively and complete equipment maintenance tasks efficiently,thus obtaining higher satisfaction.On the contrary,the translation of inferior quality may result in incorrect operation and consequent dangers to the users.Therefore,it is worth paying attention to the English-Chinese translation skills for translating equipment operation and maintenance manuals.This report summarizes the author’s/translator’s efforts in the English-Chinese translation task of RAD-900 Scanning Radiometer and Scan IRR Software Package Operation and Maintenance Manual.Based on part of the translated texts which includes general safety notice,basic equipment information,specifications,operation procedures,maintenance and fault diagnosis,with approximately 11,000 words,this project report aims to discuss the principles of technical document translation from the perspective of technical communication,and the measures of combining these principles with specific translation techniques in the translation practice.In addition,the focus and difficulties of the translation as well as their corresponding solutions are also recorded and discussed in this report.This report consists of five parts.Chapter One describes the translation project and clarifies the significance of this report.Chapter Two briefly discusses the principles of technical document translation based on the understanding of technical communication.Chapter Three introduces the pre-translation preparation work,which contains the analysis of the source text,investigation on parallel texts and choice of auxiliary tools.The focus and difficulties of translation,such as technical terms,imperative sentences,passive sentences,textual structure made up of graphics and text together are also discussed in this chapter.Under the guidance of the three principles of technical document translation,Chapter Four exemplifies in detail at lexical,syntactic and textual levels and analyzes the practical application of translation techniques,including literal translation,conversion,division,omission and restructuring,which were used by the author/translator to meet the requirements of accessibility,comprehensibility and usability.Chapter Five reflectively summarizes the translation practice and report in hope of providing reference for future English-Chinese translation of equipment operation and maintenance manuals. |
