A Report On C-E Translation Of Animation Subtitles Using The MTPE Model

The animation Lord of the Universe has been well-received and supported by anime fans in China,with its views being among the tops in Chinese animations.The author was assigned to translate the subtitles of the animation during the internship at Hangzhou Meisheng Animation Co.,Ltd.The majority of the text in the subtitles of Lord of the Universe is the characters’ dialogue.The characters in the animation communicate in vernacular Chinese.And the language is easy to understand,clear in structure,casual,and only contains a small number of literary expressions.The task was urgent,therefore the model of machine translation and post-editing(MTPE)was adopted for this project after discussion.In the preparation stage,the author studied bilingual content that was similar to the source text in this project,as well as dialogues in English TV shows of the same kind,in order to learn more about the background knowledge,taste of the audience,usual translation practice,etc.The author also screened the source text for terms and then translated them in advance.The author discussed with the initiator of the task to determine the final version of glossary and established the terminology base.In the machine translation stage,Deep L Translator was used to process the source text and found different types of errors in the machine-translated text.In the post-editing stage,the author developed post-editing methods according to the post-editing guidelines proposed by the Translation Automation User Society(TAUS)and machine translation’s frequent errors and defects found previously.By using these methods,the author could adjust the translation to meet the subtitle standard better and fit the taste of English audiences while retaining Chinese flavor.After that,the translation draft was submitted to the initiator for proofreading.During this period,the two sides worked closely to reach a consensus on the style,use of language,additions,and deletions of the target text.After studying the existing research on machine translation and post-editing,the author summarized the limitations of machine translation and the methods of postediting and then documented them in this translation report to provide a reference for translators who want to apply the MTPE model to conversational text translation in the future.
