Developmentof Peer Counselor Competence Questionnaire

The purpose of the dissertation is to discuss the competency structure of peer counseling among the social subjects based on former researches,develop competency scale suitable for selection and assessment of peer counseling,and propose suggestions available for reference on peer counseling in the future by combining this research achievement.Theexisting questionnaires for measuring the competency of psychological consultants and college peer counselors are used in this study to form question database,conduct a questionnaire survey on a total of 942 persons signing up for training of peer counseling according to different genders,ages,education levels and specialty backgrounds,and combine the supervision record of the working process of 4 peer counselors to form the basic competency structure of peer counseling and develop a self-rating questionnaire for peer counselors.The data showed that there are 5 dimensions for peer counselor competency,respectively,“Professionalism”,“Theory and Technology”,“Prosocial Personality Traits”,“Deep Care”,“Achievement Need”.The independently developed self-rating questionnaire for peer counselor competency includes 5 factors and 24 items with sound reliability,validity and identification index.There are differences for peer counselor competency in demography variables.For different genders,ages,psychological counseling qualifications,consulting experiences,illness experiences,education backgrounds and specialties,different kinds of people show different characters in total scale scores and dimensions.Based on these results,it could be concluded that thestructural model of peer counseling competency presentedinthequestionnaireconforms to the competency theory,and the model presents specific hierarchical relationship,including fivedimensions.The self-rating questionnaire for peer counselor competency can be taken as an effective tool for identification and assessment of peer counselors.
