Study On C-E Translation Of Culture-loaded Terms In The Garlic Ballads:A Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Appropriate translation of culture-loaded terms shapes China’s international image and enhances intercultural exchange.This thesis analyzes the translation of culture-loaded terms in The Garlic Ballads from the perspective of functional equivalence theory.The studies of The Garlic Ballads convey the characteristic of starting late with relatively limited achievements,and the study of the culture-loaded terms is comparatively fewer,leaving research gap for this thesis.It takes the culture-loaded terms and their translation as the research data and adopts Functional Equivalence Theory to analyze these data,aiming to provide some references for the later scholars to translate culture-loaded terms.The author finds that in the translation of ecological culture-loaded terms,social culture-loaded terms,religious culture-loaded terms,as well as linguistic culture-loaded terms,the translation methods adopted include the frequently-used free translation,the literal translation,and the combination of different translation methods.The translation methods of material culture-loaded terms include the most frequently-used free translation,the literal translation,and replacement.All these are related to the diversity of materials that Chinese people have ever created.The selection of replacement is to convey the meaning without ruining language fluency,which embodies reader’s response theory.In the analysis process,the author finds that the most frequently-used translation method is free translation,which conforms to the principle of Functional Equivalence Theory: the meaning prioritizes form.When literal translation could convey its meaning as well,the translator also tries to use as much literal translation as possible to convey its form.When both of literal translation and free translation cannot make sense,the translator uses the combination translation method to achieve the goal of functional equivalence.In a word,Functional Equivalence Theory can be used to guide the translation of culture-loaded terms and provides the theoretical basis.This thesis also finds out some demerits of Howard Goldblatt’s translation of culture-loaded terms and tries to make some improvements in order to make a better understanding of the novel proper.
