Abstract/Summary:
Charles Dickens(1812-1870)is regarded as the most outstanding novelist of Victorian era,who enjoys a great reputation both at home and abroad.Dickens’ works have been translated and introduced to China for a long time.Over the past hundred years, there have been a lot of researches on Dickens. But Charles Dickens, written by Michael Slater,is one of the Oxford biography series. The translation project, selected from the first two chapters of this book, focuses on Dickens’ childhood life and his road to early fame.During the translation report, the author adopts the most appropriate and naturally equivalent expressions in the target language under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s ‘functional equivalence theory’,so as to achieve the goal of expressing the original information in native Chinese language, and make the translation readable, acceptable and comprehensible. This report consists of four parts: the first part describes the source, the characteristics of the text and the practical and theoretical significance of the translation project;the second part focuses on the translation process, including the preparations before translation and review and the polishing after the translation;the third part is the analysis of the cases in the translation, which is the most important part in this translation report. In this part, from the levels of semantic equivalence and stylistic equivalence, the author analyzes the translation cases with some specific translation methods, such as Conversion,Interpretation,Annotation,Cutting,Splitting-off,Reversing and Recasting;the last part summarizes the translation process and the author’s refection on the whole composition of the thesis.
