A Report On The C-E Translation Of The Story Of Great Qiang(Excerpts)

The Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 destroyed the homeland where the Qiang people lived.It was also from then on that the inheritance of the Qiang oral culture started to attract more and more people’s attention.Inheritance and protection are the urgent tasks for rescuing the Qiang culture.The writers of The Story of Great Qiang collected and sorted out the legends and stories of the Qiang people from ancient times to present and wrote the book which tells the historical evolution,humanistic spirits and ethnic cultures of the Qiang people.It is a Qiang literary work with historical value.In this translation practice report,the author describes the whole translation process based on the Chinese-English translation of three stories in The Story of Great Qiang.Guided by Newmark’s text typology theory,the author adopted the translation strategies of communicative translation and semantic translation,used specific translation methods such as division,combination,amplification and omission to overcome the differences in syntactic structure,grammatical rules,expression habits and cultures between Chinese and English and to ensure the effective transmission of information and arouse the emotional resonance of the readers,so that the target language can achieve the same effect as the original language does,thus achieving the foreign exchange and communication of the Qiang culture.This report gives a detailed statement of the difficulties the author met in this translation practice and the solutions for them,hoping to provide some reference for other similar translation practices in the future.
