A Report On The E-C Translation Of Academic Interview Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

This translation practice report is based on the English-Chinese translation of an academic interview.The original text is titled Time Matters on Temporality in the Anthropocene--Elizabeth Grosz in Conversation with Heather Davis and Etienne Turpin.This academic interview mainly expounds the relationship between architecture and time,life,transformation and evolution,as well as economy and politics,and the purpose of this translation is to translate the content of academic interview into a language that the readers can understand,which is beneficial to maximizing its value,so as to better promote academic communication and mutual learning among scholars.As this academic interview is a specific informative text type,it makes some parts involved in the original text more professional,the expressions more abstract and the statements more complex.Therefore,how to deal with the consistency and cohesion of the text,abstract language and complex long sentences in the process of translation are the three major problems that the author has encountered.This translation practice report is guided by Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory.The core of the translation theory is to try to produce the effect of the target readers as close as possible to that of the original readers.Communicative translation focuses on the target language readers and tries to remove the difficulties and obstacles in reading or communication for these readers so that the communication could go on smoothly.Therefore,the translation produced under its guidance is usually smooth and easy to understand,clear and direct,standard and natural,and conforms to the specific register category.Under the guidance of this theory,the author has adopted some translation methods and skills to solve the difficult problems of text coherence and cohesion,abstract language and complex long sentences.Through summary of thetranslation practice report of this text,the author hopes to improve the professional translation competence of relevant texts,and learn to solve similar problems through some translation methods and skills.In the meanwhile,the author also hopes that this report can provide some reference for the future translators in the translation of academic interviews.
