With the development of international trade,more and more products produced in China have joined the international competition,in which the translation of user manual plays a crucial role.As a medium,the user manual directly promotes the products to the consumers,and its translation has drawn great attention from makers and translators.Based on the practical translation project of G1080 L Medium Power Continuous-wave Fiber Laser User Manual 300/500/800 W,this report discusses the specific translating process of the whole translation project.It begins with a brief introduction of the translation project,analysis of the source text,pre-translation preparation and literature review.According to the theory of Text Typology raised by Reiss,the author analyzes the source text as an informative text with operative function.Referring to Reiss’ s “Integral communicative performance”,which states that the target language should be equivalent to the source language in terms of ideational meaning,language form and interpersonal meaning,the translation methods for user manual are proposed.For the translation of ideational meaning,four translating strategies are proposed,which refers to the use of“noun/adjective + noun” and “noun + preposition + noun” structures,core words extraction and abbreviation.For the translation of language form,it is proposed to keep the original language form,to manifest logical relations,to transfer Chinese topic-theme to English subject-theme and to converse the voice of sentences.For the expression of interpersonal meaning,the report talks about the translation of mood,modality and evaluating terms respectively.Finally,combining the practical experience,the author concludes this practice report and points out the existing problems and limitations.Under the guidance of Text Typology theory,analyzing text types and text functions,choosing proper translating strategies are of vital importance for the translation of user manuals.Through this practice report,the author hopes that the translating strategies proposed in the report can provide some help for future translation practices and researches. |
