| Drugs and Drug Policy in America: A Documentary History is a book written by Steven Berenko, the senior research assistant of Columbia University’s Center for National Addiction and Substance Abuse.Based on the prior researches, the author completed this first documentary book to study American drug problems and drug policies. This translation report is based on the Part XIII of this book, which was the translation project undertaken during the author’s graduate student period. The author of this report did the English translation of the excerpt and uses it as the caseanalysis material of this translation report. The style of the whole book is both formal and casual.Guided by Catford’s translation shift theory, the report analyses three typical translation shifts between the source language and target language and summaries the translation strategies applied in the translation practice.Structure shift is the most common category shift in all grammatical levels, which means the shift of sentences’ structure. In E-C translation,it means the shift from the passive voice to the active voice, from affirmative to negative sentences, from subject-prominence to topic-prominence sentences, and from postpositive attributives to prepositive attributives.Class shift means that the class of translation unit is not equivalent to the counterpart in source text.In E-C translation, the class shift mainly focuses on the non-equivalence of parts of speech.Unit shift helps to achieve the shift to the lower or higher rank scales. It helps to realize the shifts among words, phrases and sentences. All of these shifts are applied in the translation process to realize the “equivalence” in translation,to improve the accuracy and authenticity of the translation,to meet the target readers’ expectation. The author hopes this translation report will serve as a valuable example for the application of Catford’s translation shift theory and be useful for scholars and translators who are interested in this theory. Moreover, the study of American drug problems and drug policies is meaningful for drug-controlling in China and in the whole world. |
