| Chinese culture-loaded words contain rich Chinese culture, and vary in different contexts to express different concepts. Therefore, the translation of Chinese culture-loaded words becomes a difficult point for translators. This paper takes the hermeneutic translation theory as the starting point, studies the translation of Chinese-loaded words in Chinese literary works and explores the methods and skills of interpreting Chinese culture-loaded words in English, which is of certain significance to the dissemination of Chinese culture. To Live is one of the representative works of Yu Hua,a famous contemporary Chinese writer. There are a lot of culture-loaded words in the novel To Live.According to the classification of culture by the American translation theorist Eugene Nida, the culture-loaded words can be divided into “material culture-loaded words”,“social culture loaded words”,“language culture-loaded words”,“ecological culture-loaded words” and “religious culture-loaded words” five categories, and the culture-loaded words appearing in the novel To Live are mainly material culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words and language culture-loaded words.Based on the fourfold translation motion theory put forward by French translation theorists George Steiner, this paper taking To Live as the research text, material culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words and language culture-loaded words in To Live as the corpus, and using data statistics, case analysis and induction and summary as the research methods, aims to conclude the translation methods Micheal Berry adopted in translating Chinese culture-loaded words, and analyze whether the translation is appropriate or not from the perspective of cultural output and readers’ acceptance. It found that for social culture-loaded words,Micheal Berry mainly uses literal translation and free translation, supplemented by literal translation with annotation and transliteration with annotation;for material culture-loaded words,Micheal Berry mainly uses literal translation and free translation, supplemented by transliteration;for language culture-loaded words,Micheal Berry mainly uses literal translation, supplemented by free translation. For most of the culture-loaded words in the novel,Micheal Berry handles them properly, which is not only easy for readers to understand, but also conducive to cultural diffusion. For a small part of the culture-loaded words,Micheal Berry’s translation is open to question. Therefore,Micheal Berry’s translation methods used in translating Chinese culture-loaded words is worth learning. The research results of this paper will provide some references for translators on how to better translate Chinese culture-loaded words.Through the in-depth study of hermeneutic translation theory, this paper will also provide guidance for other scholars to study the translation of culture-loaded words from the perspective of fourfold translation motion theory. |
