English plays an important role in middle school education system,and it is also a subject in underdeveloped areas at the same time.To improve the teaching effect of English subjects in these areas,we must first grasp the key points in English subject teaching and strengthen the teaching of listening skills.As the foundation of four basic English skills,listening is given the most attention in the entire process of English learning,and can reflect students’ comprehensive English ability of students.Consequently,English listening strategies are an important part among language learning strategies,the application of listening strategies is a learning process for English learners to improve their English,especially English listening skills.In the exploration of this subject,the Guangshui Experimental Junior High School was selected as a sample.An investigation is carried out to evaluate the current situation,collect problems of the students’ specific strategies in English listening learning,and find the causes of these problems.Subsequently,students from two classes(the ordinary class and the key class)of the eighth grade of the school were further selected for investigation and comparison.This research uses a listening test paper and a listening learning strategy questionnaire as survey tools.Students with different grades in the two classes are also surveyed to conduct special interviews.The main objective of this subject is to solve the following problems:(1)What are the main strategies adopted by middle school students in their daily English listening study?(2)What problems are exposed in the application of relevant strategies in the learning process of English listening?(3)What are the causes of the problems in middle school students’ learning strategies of English listening?On the basis of data and theoretical analysis,the following conclusions can be drawn from the research:(1)The students participating in this survey are at an intermediate level in their use of learning strategies of English listening.Among them,the application of cognitive strategies is the most common,followed by meta cognitive strategies;most students know less about and use social/emotional strategies.(2)In the use of learning strategies of English learning,middle school students face the following 5 problems:a lack of phonological knowledge,fewer choices of learning strategies,poor awareness of active learning,a lack of language knowledge,and a poor sense of cooperation.(3)The problems in middle school students’ learning strategies of English learning are caused by over-reliance on their mother tongue,unsound learning concepts,poor listening skills;and the simple cognitive style.The ultimate goal of this research is to better guide the development of practical activities.Suggestions for teaching improvement are put forward in the research of this article through the analysis of the problems and causes of students’ application of learning strategies of English listening.The author believes that educators should accomplish the following goals:1)develop students’ listening strategies and focus on improving listening interest;2)strengthen social/emotional strategy teaching and focus on education in emotion;3)enhance cooperation between home and school,and expand students’ listening training;4)enhance students’ meta cognitive awareness and learn to learn independently.
