The Interaction And Adjustment Of Christians And New Thoughts Around The May Fourth Movement

The May Fourth New Culture Movement is a multi-group,multi-plan and comprehensive movement.Christianity,as one of the participating groups,actually participated in and shaped this movement with an image that seems to be the opposite of the new trend of thought.In the past,the discussion of Christianity has been widely discussed and even criticized,and the Non-Christian Movement,has attracted more attention.But actually speaking,in the years before the Non-Christian Movement,when the New Culture Movement rose and became popular,various discussions about Christianity were brewing in the ideological circle.In the first two decades of the 20th century,Christianity in China gained a golden period of development due to various favorable conditions,and participated in a series of important social and historical activities during this period.At the beginning of the rise of the New Culture Movement,Christianity had optimistic expectations for it.In anti-Confucianism and other movements,it even had the same goals as the New Culture colleagues.However,with the development of new thoughts,non-religious thoughts gradually allowed it.Christianity has become the antithesis of the New Culture Movement,so it can only be called a short-term "comrade".In the face of surging new thoughts and doubts and criticisms from the outside world about Christianity,a group of enlightened liberal Christians within Christianity have embarked on the path of preaching and apologizing.The Peiking Apologetic Group is one of the representatives.The Peiking Apologetic Group was born as a result of the New Culture Movement and developed in response to the development of the New Culture Movement.The establishment of the agency publication "The Life Monthly" not only emphasized the need to conform to the new trend of thought,but also proposed that Christianity should be the guiding organ of the New Culture Movement.On the one hand,the Peiking Apologetic Group studied Christianity in a rational and objective spirit,based on itself,accepted reasonable criticism from the outside world with humility,and reformed the Chinese church in a unified and Chinese way;on the other hand,it actively responded to social thoughts and tried to give full play to the special role of Christianity in China’s social transformation.It’s just that Christianity’s efforts to adjust to the New Culture Movement to ease the relationship between the two have declared bankruptcy with the advent of the Non-Christian movement.Under the circumstances of saving the nation,the interaction and adjustment between Chinese Christianity and the New Culture Movement is not only a passive move under the trend of non-religious thought,but also a brave attempt to seize the opportunity to seek a breakthrough,which not only provides certain ideological resources for the New Culture Movement,but also explores a movement plan with Christian color for China’s social transformation.All kinds of efforts show the collective efforts of Chinese Christians for the transformation and development of Chinese society before and after the May Fourth Movement.
